In this lesson we’ll have a look at making comparisons. Today we’ll pick up where we left off last time with Mr. Bower buying vases. Listen as he talks to himself about the prices. ● I’ll buy the red kind, I guess. ○ Wǒ mǎi hóngde ba. ○ Wǒ mǎi hóngde ba. ● The red kind is cheaper. ○ Hóngde piányi. ○ Hóngde piányi. ● Hmm, the red kind is cheaper. ○ Èn, hóngde piányi. ○ Èn, hóngde piányi. Notice the use of the marker “ba” to soften the statement – “I’ll buy the red one.” to “I’ll buy the red kind, I guess.” Here’s the word for “cheap”. piányi piányi Notice that in English we say “The red one is cheaper.” with the ending -ER added to indicate comparison.
