The Charleston, social jazz dance highly popular in the 1920s and frequently revived. Characterized by its toes-in, heels-out twisting steps, it was performed as a solo, with a partner, or in a group.
The Charleston may have been based on a step called Jay – Bird, and is said to have originated in South Carolina, Charleston, where it was sighted in 1903.
