Now that you can speak quite a bit of Chinese, you’ll want to know how to answer when somebody asks you if you can speak it. In this lesson we’re going to ask and answer questions relating to whether you can speak a language or not. Listen to this exchange. ● May I ask, can you speak English? ○ Qǐngwèn, nǐ huì shuō Yīngwén ma? ○ Qǐngwèn, nǐ huì shuō Yīngwén ma? ● I can speak a little. ○ Wǒ huì shuō yìdiǎn. ○ Wǒ huì shuō yìdiǎn. Here’s the verb “to speak”. shuō shuō shuō It can also mean “to say”. Here’s an auxiliary verb which means “can” in the sense of “know how to”. huì huì huì It goes before the main verb – “huì shuō” (“to know how to speak”).
