Now it’s your turn to say the things you learned in the last lesson. Plus you’ll learn the Chinese characters. Pretend it’s your first day in Taipei. As you approach your hotel you think you recognize it. Listen. ○ 那是国宾大饭店吧? ○ 是的。 The marker “ba” is used when you have reason to believe your information is correct but you’ve never had it confirmed. Actually, this is more common than you might think. Using “ba” in sentences gives it a tone like the English “I suppose that” or “that must be”. You suggest the information rather than state it bluntly. Repeat, “That must be the Ambassador Hotel.” ○ 那是国宾大饭店吧? ○ 那是国宾大饭店吧? You’ll notice that the word “nèi” (“that”), unlike the “nèi” in “nèige” (“which”), does not need to be followed by another syllable to be a complete word. …
